VA Auto Insurance
If you live in Virginia, be aware that there are minimum requirements for VA auto insurance that must be met before you can purchase license plates or renewal decals for plates. These minimum requirements include $25,000 for njury or death of one person, $50,000 for injury or death of two or more persons, and property damage coverage of $20,000.
The alternative to buying VA auto insurance for your car is to pay an Uninsured Motor Vehicle (UMV) fee, which doesn’t provide insurance, but allows an owner to drive at his own risk. Business vehicle owners may also have an option of self-insurance or Surety Bonds.
If you drive an uninsured vehicle or haven’t paid the UMV fee, you may have your registration and driving privileges suspended. Reinstatement requires the payment of a $500 fee, filing of a Financial Responsibility Insurance Certificate for three years, and a possible reinstatement fee. When you consider the consequences of being uninsured, you might agree that it’s better to simply buy VA auto insurance.
